Located in the heart of Redding, CT, Peaceable Barn Studio was founded by Leslie Cohen-Rubury with the vision to create a community space and to introduce contact improvisation to the surrounding community. Built in 1998, the barn’s construction brought together master builders, family members, and dancers from near and far, all coming together in the spirit of improvisation… a spirit so inspiring that the first workshop preceded the completion of the floor! In addition to contact improvisation weekly classes and small, intimate weekend intensives, the studio has been home to a variety of events including monthly music and dance jams, day-long yoga workshops, kirtan chanting, community sings, musical concerts and much more. The radiant-heated floor, made of hard wood maple, is truly the heart and soul of the studio–better known as the Butter Barn due to the floor’s satiny finish.

With open arms and a welcoming spirit, Leslie and Eric Cohen-Rubury are the hosts of the workshops and retreats at the Peaceable Barn Studio. The Cohen-Rubury’s post and beam house provides healthy delicious meals and sleeping accommodations for up to 16 guests. In this environment, participants and artist-in-residence blend into the homey lifestyle along with the family pets. In addition to Eric and Leslie, Jovanina Pagano is part of the dynamic trio who helps produce the intimate weekend intensives. Leslie manages to keep all the balls in the air with a smile on her face, Eric works behind the scenes so smoothly and tirelessly, and Jovanina brings the highest quality of attention to the details of the weekends.
